Central Macomb Community Credit Union’s foundation is deeply rooted in our military. Throughout the years as our credit union has evolved, we have remained committed to our local military members. Currently, 600 of our neighbors, friends and family who faithfully serve our country as Reservists and Air National Guardsmen are now facing the possibility of losing their jobs because of budget cuts.
The climate of the economy is having a deep impact on our military forces and the United States Air Force (USAF) is required to cut their budget. While it is clearly understood that there is a need for operational cost savings, it does not make sense that the Air National Guard, the most efficient and cost effective division of the Air Force, is absorbing the majority of the cuts in the USAF 2013 budget. Of the 9900 jobs proposed for cutting, 5100 of those cuts are from Air National Guard positions.
Michigan is being impacted disproportionately in the reductions in numbers of military installations, missions and personnel, while our young men and women continue to raise their hands as volunteers in the protection of our country. This whittling away of Michigan’s civilian military force has been continuous, as demonstrated by the losses of Kincheloe Air Base in 1977, Wurtsmith Air Force Base in 1991, KI Sawyer Air Force Base in 1993 and the disestablished Army Garrison at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in 2005. Michigan is ranked last among the 50 states in the number of Department of Defense employees and the per capita Department of Defense payroll. Over the last several years, Michigan has borne too much of the brunt of the military reductions. It is simply, unfair, to ask residents of Michigan to accept further job cuts.
Our mission is clear. As a credit union founded on our local military, we will do what we can to educate our lawmakers on the important role Selfridge Air National Guard Base plays as it relates to the vitality of our local and state economy. Many of our service men and women just came home from a four-month deployment in Afghanistan, only to face the reality of possible unemployment. We will stand by our local military and do everything possible to prevent the potential loss of another 600 jobs in Macomb County and the State of Michigan.
We are asking for your support. Please help our local military members by expressing your concerns regarding this issue to your legislative representatives. Pre-drafted letters have been developed and are available at all of our branches, available for you to sign and we will mail them on your behalf.
We hope that you will emphatically support our local military members in this mission. We need our members to help send this message to Washington. Together, we can try to end these needless cuts and help gear Michigan towards the road to economic recovery. For your convenience, the letters are located in the links below for you to sign.
